Leap Year Checker
Check whether a given year is a leap year, plus the surrounding leap years.
About the Leap Year Checker
Enter a year. OmniWhen tells you whether it's a leap year, how many days the year has, and on which day of the week Feb 29 falls (when applicable). It also shows the previous and next leap year for context.
Leap years occur every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400.
How it works
A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4 — except century years not divisible by 400. So 2000 is a leap year, but 1900 and 2100 are not. The calculator also reports the day of the week February 29 falls on (when applicable) and finds the previous and next leap years.
Examples
- 2024IS a leap year · Feb 29 was a Thursday · 366 days
- 2100NOT a leap year (century not divisible by 400)
- 2400IS a leap year (divisible by 400)
Frequently asked questions
Why are some century years skipped?
Because Earth's year is ~365.2425 days, not 365.25. A leap year every 4 years over-corrects; skipping 3 century years per 400 years balances it.
When is the next century leap year?
Year 2400. Years 2100, 2200 and 2300 are all common (non-leap) years.
Do leap years exist in other calendars?
Yes — most calendars adjust periodically. The Hebrew calendar uses leap months; the Islamic calendar does not use leap years at all.
